Darwin took pride in being thrifty with paper. He tended to make notes and draft new papers on the reverse of old manuscripts, which is why many original manuscript pages do not survive.
In this case, he allowed one of his children to draw on the reverse side of the original manuscript pages of the first edition of ‘On the Origin of Species’.
