Book review: ‘HMS Beagle: Survey Ship Extraordinary’ by Karl Heinz Marquardt

Meticulously detailed ship's plans of HMS Beagle, for anyone thinking of making a model or replica!

HMS BeagleOK, this one is really only essential reading for Darwin completists, model-making nerds, and anyone hoping to make a working replica of HMS Beagle. But it's a fantastic book!

Marquardt's research is meticulous and his detailed ship's plans are phenomenal. It's a real labour of love.

But, like I said, you need to be a real Darwin completist to buy it.

Which is why I did!

“…wonderfully droll, witty and entertaining… At their best Carter’s moorland walks and his meandering intellectual talk are part of a single, deeply coherent enterprise: a restless inquiry into the meaning of place and the nature of self.”
